Turbochargers are a type of forced air induction system, they compress the air entering the engine. Turbos are powered by the hot exhaust gasses that exit the engine. As the exhaust gasses leave the engine, they pass through the turbo and spin a compressor wheel. This wheel compresses the intake air and forces it into the engine. The advantage of compressing the air entering the engine is that compressed air is denser air, and denser air has more oxygen molecules in it compared to naturally aspirated, uncompressed air. Forcing denser air into a cylinder means that more fuel can be added while keeping the correct fuel air mixture intact. Because of this, you get more power from each explosion in each cylinder. A turbocharged engine produces vastly more power than the same engine naturally aspirated. Turbocharging drastically improves the power-to-weight ratio of an engine, while also decreasing EGT’s significantly.
